I stick up photos of this old site from time to time, because it’s such a picturesque old elevator. I love to visit it on my journies west. This time I moved backward and framed the base with the tall weeds along the roadway. The tiny town of Delavan, Kansas is about 7 miles east of Herrington, in Morris County. Except for a handful of nice homes and a clean community center the town is faded, many of the old buildings are simply collapsing onto their foundations. Still, the town feels more cheerful than it sounds. The highway from the east follows a wide S-curve past a nice home and the sparkling white center. That creates a nice first impression before you hit the rusty heart of the city.
