These boys are known for their nasty temperament, though this one had a good reason to be testy. I was using a long stem of grass to get a reaction out of him, and it did. I was using a sheath about 10 inches long but the first jump-attack from the snapper seemed like about 12 inches. I doubt that it was really that much but it was explosively fast, and between the lunge and stretching his neck he came too close to nipping a finger. Despite a reputation for being slow a snapping turtle, when he attacks, is incredibly quick – but he still missed me.
