Cicada

Found in a roadside weed patch in Lyon County, Kansas

The coloring of this guy helps to show its best features. Looking like 3 tiny rubies, the ocelli are easily visible on the forehead. Ocelli are “simple eyes”, light sensing organs that are thought to help with flight stability. Many insects have them, in addition to the more complex eyes.
I was lucky to get an in focus photo. The little bugger was constantly pacing up and down the stem.
