Praying mantises seem unusually common around here this fall. Maybe it’s because I’m spending more time consicious of the small lives in our shrubs, crawling across our sidewalks, doing highwire acts along our porches. Praying mantises are generally very calm, watching us with a steady gaze. And they can be incredibly expressive, in their gangly way.
