Burgess Marsh – Autumn Colors

Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge, near Hartford, Kansas – This is a reworked-for-print version a photo taken of autumn colors in the fog around the marshes in Sept 2009. It was a cold, foggy morning, and I was soaking wet by the end of the trip. Access to some of the areas required trudging through patches of over-my-head wet swamp grass, but the subtle colors and glow were all well worth it – and I do kind of enjoy that sort of thing. I’ve been revisiting the series this winter, reinterpreting some for print. The colors need to be a bit more vivid (but still natural as possible) to look good on paper.
