Return of the Mantis

Here he is again, mugging in front of a blackeyed susan, and he brought friends. Here’s a quick sampling of critters busy in my yard this month. There are LOTS of grasshoppers too.

I still don’t know what this is, but I’m looking for some kind of identification.

Possibly an Eastern Tailed Blue moth

Pretty isn’t it?
This is the Ailanthus Webworm Moth. Yup, it’s the grownup version of the caterpillars
that you see foraging inside of unsightly webs this time of year. I don’t mind them, unless the
infestation gets extreme. It’s interesting to watch them, and I think
the web shrouded communities have some artsy qualities.

Grass Spider: I looked for it yesterday but there was no sign of it. The web is in disrepair so I thought it died. But it’s just deep down in its tunnel, maybe digesting a big meal. I annoyed it enough to get a good reaction out of it. They’re a little poisonous (hemotoxic) but not a real danger to people.

Beautiful bugs! Do you have a name for the second? Even the house fly looks pretty in your photo!
