Light Merchant

Americus Days – Americus, Kansas

As I drove through Americus last night I looked toward the park and saw sparkling hats, curves of neon color, and the swoops of contesting light sabers. The annual Americus Days celebration was continuing into the night. On the concrete basketball court, a band was bathed in spotlights. A small trailer/concession stood like a tropical space ship on the dark grass. Children were swirling on the merri-go-round, swinging, visiting, most adorned with colorful lights. Where did this magic come from? On the edge of the park I found the light merchant, wrapped in his own wares, selling wonders from boxes on a small table.
