As I’m poking around trees and shrubs searching for creatures I notice it in the shadowed crook of the tree. This is the largest wolf spider I’ve ever encountered, hiding among the shadows beside this Flint Hills Wildlife Refuge trail. I guesstimate his size at around 5″ leg-span. The spider’s patterns blend well into its surroundings, and it’s barely visible to the eye.
