May Lightning Storm

Early morning lightning and thunder rolled in with the sunrise in Lyon County today, bringing with it 60 mph winds – which took a few trees and limbs down. I drove out into the country, parked the truck on the edge of road 195, and took some slow-shutter, hand-held photos through an open window as the wind blew rain in my face. I tried bracing the camera against the side of the window frame, but wind was buffeting the truck so much that it was little help. About all one can do is take photo after photo, hoping that lightning will strike at just the right moment. Out of almost two hundred attempts, done while regularly wiping rain off the camera’s skylight filter with my tee shirt, I captured one intracloud lightning flash.

Sometimes, like this instance, persistence pays off. Neat shot, Dave.
